VMWare Launch Photon OS, a Core OS Competitors

What is Photon OS? Photon OS is new operating system build by VMWare to be host for virtualizing containerized apps. This brand new OS is using Linux Kernel.

Photon OS is the first operating system build specially by VMWare. VMWare past solution is just stripping out Debian Linux and using their custom recipes on top of it. But, Photon OS is different.

In the project website, the leader said: “Photon is a technology preview of a minimal Linux container host. It is designed to have a small footprint and boot extremely quickly on VMware platforms. Photon is intended to invite collaboration around running containerized applications in a virtualized environment,”

Default Package of Photon OS

Photon OS is intended to be one of CoreOS competitor. They shipping Docker, Pivotal Garden, rkt container, sleamless VMWare vSphere integration.

Photon OS is also packaging new package management fork form YUM (by Fedora/Red Hat community).

You can download the Photon OS ISO from their project website. The first pre-release of Photon OS is available.
