Ubuntu MATE developers have been working on some tools that allowed them to build the distribution for the Raspberry Pi 2 platform, and they are looking to share those tools and to name them so that other projects can use them, like Xubuntu or Lubuntu.
Building the distribution for Raspberry Pi 2 might become a regular thing now after the Ubuntu MATE made this a part of their release schedule. This is interesting because the Raspberry Pi 2 image is not part of the regular release, but that didn’t stop them from doing it anyway. To make this happen, they put together some tools and now they want some help from the community to name them.
As it stands right now, there are a number of available Linux distributions for Raspberry Pi 1 & 2, but the community always wants more. There are some very good technical reasons why we won’t see Ubuntu or Kubuntu running on a Raspberry Pi anytime soon, but those reasons don’t apply to all the official flavors.
The Ubuntu MATE team is setting an example in this regard, and it looks like they already managed to release one of the best distros for this mini-pc.
More distros mean more fun
The tools are already under construction, and anyone interested can download the source package for it, but please keep in mind that they still need to be improved. In any case, if things go well, we should see a series of new distros for Raspberry Pi 2 pretty soon.

Now, the developers need a proper name, and a few have been provided already. In any case, Martin will probably talk about it at the upcoming OggCamp and Ubuntu UOS, so we’ll know more about it by then. In the meantime, you can download the download the Ubuntu MATE 15.10 for Raspberry Pi distribution from the official servers.
