Today, December 7, 2015, Justin Sherrill from the DragonFly BSD project, a BSD-based computer operating system, had the great pleasure of announcing the release and immediate availability for download of DragonFly BSD 4.4.
The fact of the matter is that DragonFly BSD 4.4 was released for download last week, without having an official announcement. But today, the team also released the first maintenance build of DragonFly BSD 4.4, along with the official release notes, so we can learn a thing or two about the new features implemented, as well as the bugs fixed since the previous stable version.
Prominent features of DragonFly BSD 4.4 improvements to graphics support, which include updated Intel i915 and AMD Radeon video drivers as part of the pre-installed Linux 3.18 kernel, collation support for named locales, rewrite of the locale system, replacement of the regex library with TRE, as well as the implementation of the gold linker by default.
“DragonFly version 4.4 bring further updates to accelerated video for both i915 and Radeon users, a new locale system, and a new default linker. Significant behind-the-scenes work has also been done, with symbol versioning, Hammer1 improvements, and other changes. Version 4.4.1 was the first release due to the late inclusion of OpenSSL update 1.0.1q,” reads the official announcement.
Hammer2 gets new features
In this new release of DragonFly BSD, the Hammer2 file system gets new features, such as support for mounting root mounts, support for live dedup, as well as the ability to set up the Hammer2 file system for single-host testing. Additionally, a lot of work has been done for Clang in DragonFly BSD, but users should keep in mind that it is not officially supported.
