Arne Exton informed us about the availability for download of a new build of his PuppEX Linux distribution, a remix of the Slackware-based version of the lightweight Puppy Linux operating system.
The big changes of the PuppEX 151130 release is the rebase of the entire operating system on the Puppy Linux Slacko64 6.3.0 distribution, which has been officially announced approximately two weeks ago, on November 16, 2015, as well as the implementation of Linux kernel 4.3 (4.3.0-x86_64-puppex).
“I’ve changed kernel from 4.1.11 to 4.3.0-x86_64-puppex and installed Nvidia graphics driver 352.63. The Nvidia driver will be used if your computer/card is “modern” enough,” said Arne Exton. “I’ve also added VLC and Google Chrome (just as I said to make it possible to watch Netflix movies).”
Compatible with Slackware 14.1
While PuppEX keeps the original desktop environment used in the upstream Puppy Slacko64 distro, it adds the PCManFM file manager as a replacement for ROX-Filer and the LXTerminal terminal emulator instead of RXVT. Additionally, the new release of PuppEX also includes the Google Chrome 46.0 web browser for watching Netflix movies.
Moreover, PuppEX 151130 is fully compatible with the Slackware 14.1 binaries and software repositories, includes the latest Nvidia Linux Display Driver 352.63, VLC Media Player 2.2.1, Adobe Flash Player, GIMP image editor, and a collection of compiler tools that lets users install software from sources. Of course, all these extra software contributed to the increase in size of the ISO image from ~500MB to ~800MB.
However, Arne Exton promises that PuppEX still runs as fast as the original Puppy Linux Slacko64 distribution, despite the growth in size of the ISO image. Also, PuppEX runs directly from RAM.
