Linux News Today: Custom Android-x86 KitKat 4.4.4 OS Is Out with GAPPS and Linux Kernel 4.0.9 LTS

Posted on January 28, 2016 by Syauqi Wiryahasana

GNU/Linux developer Arne Exton informs Softpedia today about the immediate availability for download of a new build of his custom Android-x86 KitKat 4.4.4 computer operating system.

Based on the recently released Android-x86 4.4-r4 distribution, which is the last in the KitKat (Android 4.4) series,  and powered by a custom 4.0.9-exton-android-x86 kernel, Android-x86 KitKat 4.4.4 Build 160125 Version 8 is here to improve the overall graphic performance by adding the Mesa 3D Graphics Library 10.5.9 software, as well as to make the Bluetooth support work again thanks to the Bluetooth File Transfer app.

"I’ve added Mesa (3D Graphics Library) 10.5.9 for better Graphic performance. The system can run live (from CD or a USB stick) on almost all laptops (and some Desktop computers)," said Arne Exton. "What’s the point? Well, if you like your Android phone and all the apps you have installed on it I’m sure you will also like to run apps from your laptop."

Comes preinstalled with Google Play Store

Another great thing about Android-x86 KitKat 4.4.4 Build 8, which is a drop-in replacement for all the previous builds, is that it comes with the GAPPS (Google Apps) package, giving users access to all the important Google applications and services, including, but not limited to, Google Play Store, Google Play Services, Google Maps, and YouTube.

Additionally, the developer managed to include several other great applications, such as WPS Office and Spotify. Arne Exton assures users that everything works as expected, and that the installation is as easy as pie. After installation, you will be able to add even more Android apps via the Google Play Store. If you don't want to install it, you can run the system directly from the bootable medium.

Unfortunately, Android-x86 KitKat 4.4.4 Build 8 is not free and it costs $9 (€8).
