Linux News Today: Git 2.7 Open-Source Distributed Version Control System Is a Massive Release

Posted on January 05, 2016 by Syauqi Wiryahasana

Git 2.7 major release of the world's best free, open-source and cross-platform distributed version control software used by millions of developers worldwide arrived on January 4, 2016, for all supported operating systems, including GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows.

According to the internal changelog, which we've attached at the end of the article for reference, Git 2.7 is a massive release that includes numerous improvements to the user interface, workflows, development support, performance, and internal implementation.

As one might expect from such a major release of a piece of software, Git 2.7 fixes numerous issues that remained unresolved since the previous branch, Git 2.6. In numbers, over 55 bugs were squashed. Additionally, Git 2.7 adds countless under-the-hood improvements and optimizations, making the software more reliable and stable.

Highlights of Git 2.7

It would be quite impossible to us to list here all the new features and bug fixes implemented in the Git 2.7 release, but we can inform you about its highlights, which include better HiDPI support, the addition of new functionalities and options to various Git commands, and credential-cache daemon improvements.

"Some features from 'git tag -l' and 'git branch -l' have been made available to 'git for-each-ref' so that eventually the unified implementation can be shared across all three. The version merged to the 'master' branch earlier had a performance regression in 'tag --contains,' which has since been corrected," reads the announcement.

Again, if you would like to see what exactly has been changed in Git 2.7, we recommend taking a look at the changelog attached below. In the meantime, you can download Git 2.7.0 for GNU/Linux, Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows operating systems right now from Softpedia or directly from the project's website, where you can find all the details you need to get started with Git.
