Linux News Today: Opera 37 Web Browser Now in Development, Users Should Expect a Few Surprises

Posted on February 18, 2016 by Syauqi Wiryahasana

Opera Software, through Błażej Kaźmierczak, announced the promotion of the Opera 37.0 web browser to the Developer channel for all supported operating systems, including GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows.

If you're reading the news lately, you may know that a Chinese company is planning to buy Opera Software, but the Opera developers assured its user base that they have nothing to worry about. However, Opera is and will remain a closed-source web browser based on the open-source Chromium project.

In the release announcement for Opera 37.0 Dev, instead of informing users about the upcoming features, the Opera developers teased users, saying they are preparing a couple of surprises for them, which might be revealed in the coming builds or the final releases. One thing we know though, is that Opera 37 won't run on Windows XP and Vista.

"Now we are preparing a small surprise for you, or actually, two, if we manage to fix everything on time. You will not find it in changelog, not even in the flags," said Błażej Kaźmierczak. "We can’t say yet what that is, but you are very welcome to help us testing recent updates on sync engine and other bugfixes."

Early adopters are free to download the Opera 37.0 Build 2142 for GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows operating systems right now via our website and help Opera Software find issues. Please keep in mind though that this is a pre-release version, not suitable for production use. Below we've attached the entire changelog if you're curious to know what's new.
