Linux News Today: US Air Force's Secure LPS (Lightweight Portable Security) Linux OS Gets Updated

Posted on February 12, 2016 by Syauqi Wiryahasana

Lightweight Portable Security (LPS), a thin Linux kernel-based operating system that creates a secure end node from trusted media on almost any PC, has been updated recently to version 1.6.4.

Being built by the US Air Force, LPS has been designed with one purpose in mind: to be as secure as possible and to not leave any trace of the users. Kind of like the Tails amnesic incognito live system, which ex-CIA employee Edward Snowden used to stay anonymous online.

The latest version, LPS Public 1.6.4, tries to bring some of the latest and up-to-date GNU/Linux technologies to the distribution, such as OpenSSH 7.1p2, OpenSSL 1.0.2f, GnuTLS 3.3.20, PCSC-Lite 1.8.15 with CCID 1.4.21, Encryption Wizard 3.4.9, Citrix Receiver 13.3, NSS 3.21, and NSPR 4.11.

Among the updated applications, we can mention Mozilla Firefox 38.6.0 ESR (Extended Support Release) with the NoScript 2.9.0.2 and HTTPS Everywhere 5.1.2 add-ons, Mozilla Thunderbird 38.5.1 and LibreOffice 4.4.7 (both being available only in the Deluxe version), Adobe Flash Player 11.2.202.559, and Oracle Java 8 Update 71.

Last but not least, LPS Public 1.6.4 updates the DoD root certificates to include a new SHA-256 certificate chain, and adds "Off the Record" support for the Pidgin multi-protocol IM (Instant Messenger) client.
