Linux News Today: Canonical Releases Snapcraft 2.4 Snappy Creator Tool for Ubuntu Snappy Core

Posted on March 10, 2016 by Syauqi Wiryahasana

Today, March 10, 2016, Canonical, through Sergio Schvezov, has announced the release and general availability of the Snapcraft 2.4 Snappy creator tool for the Ubuntu Snappy Core operating system.

Canonical has built Ubuntu Snappy Core specifically to be deployed on embedded and IoT (Internet of Things) devices, so those of you who use it are already aware of Snapcraft and its awesome Snappy technologies.

Snapcraft 2.4 is yet another maintenance release of the powerful utility that lets users build and manage snaps for Snappy Ubuntu Core, and it adds some very attractive features, such as support for migrating from skills to interfaces.

Additionally, Snapcraft 2.4 adds support for parallel builds, but only for plugins that support this feature, implements a "--debug" argument that allows you to write a plugin for Snapcraft much more easily than before, and supports daemon restarts.

But that's not all, as the devs have managed to clean the output, have added a smarter source management infrastructure for subdirectories, and have cleaned the human readable errors that were displayed during improper build- and catkin-packages or invalid commands.

"We are pleased to announce the release of version 2.4 of Snapcraft," says Sergio Schvezov in the release announcement. "To consume the latest snapcraft release on Xenial Xerus (16.04), we suggest you install the snapcraft package from the Ubuntu Archives."

Installing Snapcraft 2.4 in your Ubuntu OS

Snapcraft 2.4 has already been pushed to the main software repositories of the upcoming Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system, so you'll be able to install/update it using the next set of commands.

sudo apt update && sudo apt install snapcraft

Those of you who want to also install the Snapcraft 2.4 examples package need to execute the command below in the Terminal app after running the two commands listed above.

sudo apt install snapcraft-examples
