Linux News Today: Nvidia Releases Long-Lived 361.42 Graphics Driver for Linux, FreeBSD and Solaris

Posted on March 31, 2016 by Syauqi Wiryahasana

Just a little more than a week after the release of the Nvidia 364.12 graphics driver for *NIX platforms, today, March 30, 2016, Nvidia released an updated version for its long-lived branch.

The awesome thing about the Nvidia 364.12 driver was that it introduced support for the new Vulkan 1.0 API, as well as for the next-generation Mir and Wayland display servers, and now, Nvidia added support for more modern graphics cards to Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris users with the 361.42 update.

For example, according to the release notes, Nvidia 361.42 adds support for GeForce 920MX, GeForce 930MX, and Quadro M6000 24GB graphics cards. This means, of course, that if you own one of these GPUs and run Linux, BSD or Solaris, you'll need to install the Nvidia 361.42 driver released today.

Besides adding support for the Nvidia GPUs mentioned above, the Nvidia 361.42 graphics driver limits the default concurrency level in the nvidia-settings control panel to 32, so that the maximum limit for tasks is not reached on systems that have multiple CPUs.

More regressions have been fixed in Nvidia 361.42

The long-lived Nvidia 361.42 graphics driver also fixes a bunch of regressions introduced in the previous milestone. For example, there was a regression that caused incorrect rendering and GPU exceptions when pbuffers where used with EGLDevice, and another one that caused the timing polarity flags of the VSync and HSync modes to be inverted.

Among other changes, we can notice a fix for a crash with the nvidia-settings control panel, which occurred when attempting to parir glasses with the 3D Vision Pro transmitter, but only on some systems, as well as a bug that duplicated some of the manifest entries of the graphics driver installer.

Nvidia 361.42 is available for download right now for 64-bit and 32-bit GNU/Linux operating systems, as well as for the FreeBSD and Solaris platforms via our website. More details about the changes implemented in this maintenance release should be available in the announcement. All users should update as soon as possible.
