Linux News Today: Vivaldi Rebased on Chromium 49.0.2623.102, Gets New Option for Tab Switching

Posted on March 23, 2016 by Syauqi Wiryahasana

Ruarí Ødegaard from the Vivaldi team announced on March 22, 2016, the release and immediate availability of a new snapshot of the Chromium-based web browser for all supported platforms.

Vivaldi snapshots are here only for early adopters who live on the bleeding-edge and also want to help the Vivaldi devs discover and patch new bugs in the upcoming web browser, which should see a final production version later this spring if everything goes according to plan.

The Vivaldi Snapshot 1.0.429.5 released today brings, as expected, even more bug fixes. But before we tell you what has been fixed, you should know that this new build has been rebased on the Chromium 49.0.2623.102 web browser, and there's a new option for tab switching.

"In today's snapshot we have fixed the freeze that Windows 10 (Threshold 2) users were experiencing with videos on news sites, Twitter and Facebook," said Ruarí Ødegaard, Linux QA and Testing at Vivaldi. "We also added a new option to help users who miss being able to 'minimise' tabs."

Vivaldi offers a new way of switching tabs

In other exciting news, the Vivaldi developers implemented a new option that lets users switch between the active tab and the previous one more easily and quickly, which might be just one of the best features of the upcoming web browser, especially for those who use many tabs.

"A few of you however specifically asked for behaviour similar to the 'minimise tab' method provided by Presto Opera's MDI (multi-document interface). Our new option provides a close approximation of this. By clicking on the currently active tab you are taken one step back in the activation history," the Vivaldi devs have explained.

If you consider yourself an early adopter, you can download the Vivaldi Snapshot 1.0.429.5 right now from our website for GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, or Microsoft Windows operating systems. Otherwise, wait for the final release to get out in the coming months. Below we've attached the entire changelog for Snapshot 1.0.429.5.
