Arne Exton released today, April 13, 2016, a new version of his Slackware-based SlackEX Live Linux distribution, bringing updates to core components and the graphical desktop environment.
SlackEX Build 160413 has been actually generated on April 12, 2016, but it took the developer another day to put together some informative release notes, letting us know that he managed to push in the just released Linux 4.5.1 kernel, which, of course, has been tweaked with some extra patches.
Linux kernel 4.5.1 replaces the old 4.4.1 version that was used in the previous SlackEX build, bringing users support for all the latest and most modern hardware components. Moreover, Arne Exton managed to rebase the base system on the latest Slackware 14.2/Current release and upgrade the KDE4 desktop environment to version 4.14.18.
"I have replaced kernel 4.4.1-x86_64-exton with kernel 4.5.1-x86_64-exton with support for “everything”. Most important is that I have changed repositories from Slackware 14.1 to Current i.e. Slackware 14.2. KDE is upgraded to version 4.14.18 (latest KDE version)," said Arne Exton in today's announcement.
Most of the app were updated to the latest Slackware-Current version
As expected, SlackEX Build 160413 comes today with up-to-date core components, which have been updated to the latest Slackware-Current version. Moreover, Arne Exton added some software that aren't yet available in the upstream Slackware repos, such as GParted 0.24.0, VirtualBox 5.0.16, and Google Chrome 46.0.2490.86.
Among other new software versions added to SlackEX Build 160413, we can mention, GIMP 2.8.10, which has been installed from sources, GSlapt 0.5.3h, Mozilla Firefox 45.0.2, Mozilla Thunderbird 38.7, Samba 4.3.2, and GCC 5.3.0. Lastly, NetworkManager replaces Wicd as default network connection manager. Download SlackEX Build 160413.
