Linux News Today: Linux Kernel 4.1.24 LTS Has Improvements for R9 270X and R7 370 AMD Radeon GPUs

Posted on May 12, 2016 by Syauqi Wiryahasana

After Greg Kroah-Hartman's announcement for the release of Linux kernel 4.5.4, kernel developer Sasha Levin published details about the twenty-fourth maintenance version of the long-term support Linux 4.1 kernel series.

Linux kernel 4.1.24 LTS appears to be a small update that changes a total of 30 files, with 122 insertions and 62 deletions. According to the changelog, this release updates the Radeon drivers to add support for ASUS Radeon R7-370 STRIX and AMD Radeon R9 270X graphics cards, along with a fix for the initial connector audio value on AMD GPUs, and reverts the "drm/radeon: disable runtime pm on PX laptops without dGPU power control" change introduced in the previous point release.

"I'm announcing the release of the 4.1.24 kernel. All users of the 4.1 kernel series must upgrade," said Sasha Levin. "The updated 4.1.y git tree can be found at: git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git linux-4.1.y and can be browsed at the normal kernel.org git web browser: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=summary."

PowerPC, s390, and x86 improvements

In addition to the Radeon graphics driver improvements mentioned above, Linux kernel 4.1.24 LTS adds various small fixes to the PowerPC (PPC), s390, and x86 hardware architectures, minor improvements to the networking and sound stack (netlink, wireless nl80211, HDA, and pcxhr), and more updated drivers, in particular for things like crypto, EDAC, PINCTRL (PIN CONTROL), USB, and Wireless ones.

If you're using a GNU/Linux operating system powered by a kernel from the Linux 4.1 LTS (Long Term Support) series, you are urged to update to today's Linux kernel 4.1.24 LTS release as soon as possible, or as soon as it lands in the main software repositories of your distributions. OS vendors and maintainers can download the Linux kernel 4.1.24 LTS sources via our website or from kernel.org.
