Linux News Today: 4MLinux 19.0 Distribution Enters Beta, Uses GCC 6.1.0 & Linux Kernel 4.4.14 LTS

Posted on July 11, 2016 by Syauqi Wiryahasana

Zbigniew Konojacki informs Softpedia today, July 10, 2016, about the availability for download of the Beta of the 4MLinux 19.0 operating system, which will be released later this year.

As usual, the development cycle of a new 4MLinux release begins with the Core edition, a barebone version that only has a few MB in size, on which all the rest of the variants from the 4MLinux family of Linux kernel-based operating systems are based.

4MLinux 19.0 Core Beta is now ready for public testing, but don't expect too much because, as noted above, it doesn't include a graphical desktop environment, only command-line utilities. The Beta version of the 4MLinux 19.0 operating system will be released soon, most probably in the coming weeks.

Powered by Linux kernel 4.4 LTS and GCC 6.1.0

The good thing about 4MLinux is that it is always up to date with the latest GNU/Linux technologies, and development of a new release begins shortly after the previous one ends. For example, 4MLinux 18.0 final was announced on July 1, and now, one week later, development starts for 4MLinux 19.0.

As for the new GNU/Linux technologies implemented in 4MLinux 19.0, we can mention the latest GNU Compiler Collection (GCC) 6.1.0 compiler for those who want to compile programs from sources for the 32-bit (i686) hardware architectures, the long-term supported (LTS) Linux 4.4.14 kernel, BusyBox 1.24.2, and GNU C Library (GLibc) 2.23.

"This is a core system (only a few MB in size) for the 4MLinux 19.0 series. The system includes: the Linux kernel 4.4.14, GNU C Library 2.23, and BusyBox 1.24.2. The 4MLinux 19.0 series uses GNU Compiler Collection 6.1.0 to compile programs designed for the i686 architecture," said Zbigniew Konojacki.

Download 4MLinux 19.0 Core Beta right now via our website, where it is distributed as a single ISO image that includes only 32-bit software, which means that you can use it on both 32-bit and 64-bit computers. As usual, please note that this is a pre-release version of Beta quality, so don't use it for the creation of production-ready operating systems.
