Linux News Today: Calibre 2.63.0 eBook Converter and Viewer Adds Unicode 9.0 Support, Bugfixes

Kovid Goyal has released yet another maintenance update for his popular, open-source, free, and cross-platform Calibre ebook library management software, version 2.63.0.

Calibre 2.63.0 arrives two weeks after the release of the previous maintenance update, Calibre 2.62.0, which introduced support for the new Kindle Oasis ebook reader from Amazon, as well as reading and writing of EPUB 3 metadata.

Unfortunately, there aren’t many interesting features added in the Calibre 2.63.0 release, except for the implementation of Unicode 9.0 support in the regex engine of the Edit Book feature that lets users edit books that contain characters encoded with the recently released Unicode 9.0 standard.

Also, it appears that the News Download feature have been updated in Calibre 2.63.0 to let users control the periodicals that are being automatically delivered to a certain email address. The new feature is called “Sharing by email” and can be found under the Preferences dialog.

Bugfixes, updated news sources

As expected, Calibre 2.63.0 is all about bug fixes, as Kovid Goyal always listens to users and tries to patch as many issues that are being reported with each new release as possible. For example, pasting of ISBN codes from clipboard now works, and it’s now possible to refresh the Live CSS and Preview panels of the Edit Book component.

Moreover, reading of EPUB 3 metadata now works correctly in the E-book viewer component, there are some improvements for MODI files and CSV Catalog output, the EPUB 3 metadata support was updated to overwrite existing authors when updating EPUB 3 files, and the duplicate detection was greatly improved.

Lastly, the Book details panel has been updated to automatically choose the color that is being used for links from the current color theme of the host operating system where Calibre is installed. A HiDPI issue that caused blurry selection dialog on Windows was fixed as well.

As usual with any new Calibre release, multiple news sources are being improved. Therefore, Calibre 2.63.0 updates the  Financial Times (UK), Berlin Policy Journal,  Foreign Affairs, Gosc Niedzielny, Gazet van Antwerpen, Nikkei Free, and Hurriyet news sources.
