Linux News Today: Latest Steam Beta Client Adds More Goodies to Steam Controller, Linux Chat Fix

Posted on July 15, 2016 by Syauqi Wiryahasana

Today, July 14, Valve released a new Beta version of its desktop Steam Client for all supported platforms, including GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows.

The most important changes have been implemented, as usual, in the Steam Controller support. Therefore, users are now getting a "Set Cursor Position" binding controller action that lets them set a random X/Y position to be moved to a button press, but it's more versatile than this.

"This allows an arbitrary X/Y position to be moved to on a button press and optionally warp back to the original position on release. When combined with a click via either multi-binding or an additional activator, allows for on-screen UI to be bound to buttons even if they have no hotkey," reads today's announcement.

Additionally, Valve also implemented multi-bound to a single button for Multiple Set Cursor Position inputs, allowing users to set the cursor position binding-cycling on the Steam Controller, and added the ability for the scroll wheel mode on the Joystick to ignore its return to the center position after doing vertical or horizontal scrolling.

The last feature described above also allows users to cycle bindings through the scroll wheel on up, down, left, and right taps. Last but not least, Valve also added a new "Gyro Button Behavior" setting that lets users temporarily disable gyro support by pressing and holding on the button.

Clickable URLs are now handled in chat text for Steam on Linux

Today's Steam Beta Client update also fixes a few issues for the Steam Controller, which have been discovered since the last release or reported by users, addresses the handling of clickable URLs in chat text for Steam on Linux, and adds support for spectating VR (Virtual Reality) games from the Steam Link device.

Last but not least, this is the first version of the Steam Client to add support for Apple's upcoming acOS Sierra 10.12 computer operating system. Of course, this is a Beta version and it's available via the Steam Beta channel, but you should wait for these changes to arrive in the stable channel, which should happen soon.
