As we reported last week, Canonical published the first point release of its long-term supported Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system, offering users new installation mediums with all the updates made available since April 21, 2016.
The Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS update brought new releases for all the officially supported flavors, including but not limited to Ubuntu MATE 16.04.1 LTS, Xubuntu 16.04.1 LTS, and Ubuntu GNOME 16.04.1 LTS, about which we would like to tell you a few words in this article.
First off, Ubuntu GNOME 16.04.1 LTS was made available, as expected, only for those who want to either upgrade from a previous release, such as Ubuntu GNOME 15.10, which will reach end of life in a few days, or deploy the GNU/Linux operating system on new computers.
Second of all, it appears that Ubuntu GNOME 16.04.1 LTS still doesn’t include the long-awaited GNOME 3.20 Stack update many users have hoped for. A few apps, such as GNOME Software, were updated to the 3.20.x branch, but numerous others remain based on the 3.18.x series. Not to mention that Nautilus is at version 3.14.
“As usual, this point release includes many updates, and updated installation media has been provided so that fewer updates will need to be downloaded after installation. These include security updates and corrections for other high-impact bugs, with a focus on maintaining stability and compatibility with Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 LTS,” says Jeremy Bicha in the announcement.
Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 LTS to be supported for three years
Another interesting change of the Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 LTS release is that it finally opens the upgrade path from the Ubuntu GNOME 14.04.4 LTS (Trusty Tahr) operating system. Therefore, if you’re using this version, you’ll get an upgrade notification, so follow the instructions exactly.
Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) is an LTS (Long Term Support), but it will be supported only for three years, not five like other Ubuntu flavors.
