The new Ubuntu GNOME 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) has been unveiled by its developers and is now ready for download. The latest version of this Ubuntu flavor comes with the newest GNOME 3.16.x packages, but it can be upgraded to GNOME 3.18.
The Ubuntu GNOME and GNOME projects are not in sync, and that means that it’s impossible for the developers of the distribution to get the latest GNOME packages in time for the release. A good example of projects in sync is the relationship between Fedora and GNOME. Until that happens on a developer level, users will never get to use the latest GNOME packages in Ubuntu.
Fortunately, there is a somewhat safe (or dangerous) method of getting the newer GNOME 3.18 packages installed. It involves the use of a PPA, and it’s not all that difficult. We have a tutorial in place for anyone who wants to try it. It’s not difficult, but it’s about upgrading a complex piece of software, and that always carries some risk with it.

“Ubuntu GNOME is an official flavor of Ubuntu, featuring the GNOME desktop environment. Ubuntu GNOME is a mostly pure GNOME desktop experience built from the Ubuntu repositories,” say the developers on the official wiki.
According to the changelog, GNOME Shell 3.16 has been integrated by default, most of the GNOME 3.16 applications have been added, the new GNOME Getting Started Guide is now shown at login, Shotwell has been replaced with GNOME Photos, and GNOME Music is now provided in the default installation. Then, the Bluetooth stack (BlueZ 5) has been updated, support has been added to use syncevolution with GNOME Online Accounts (GOA), the Adwaita Dark Theme should now work for Ubuntu Software Centre, a new Ubiquity Slide Show has been added, and a new experimental Wayland session is now available and can be selected from the login menu (it needs OSS GPU drivers).
