Linux News Today: Simple Desktop Display Manager (SDDM) Now Supports Wayland Sessions

Posted on September 08, 2015 by Syauqi Wiryahasana

Pier Luigi Fiorini, the creator and lead developer of the independent and open-source SDDM (Simple Desktop Display Manager) login manager software used on numerous desktop environments, including KDE, LXDE, and Hawaii, announced the release of version 0.12.0.

According to the changelog attached at the end of the article, SDDM 0.12.0 introduces, for the first time ever, support for Wayland session, though the greeter will still run on top of the X.Org Server. However, this makes it possible to login into Wayland desktop environments.

Furtheremore, SDDM now depends on Qt 5.3 or higher, adds three new the options to the configuration file (sddm.conf), namely 'XephyrPath', 'ServerArguments', and 'DisplayStopCommand', allowing users to default to /usr/bin/Xephyr, -nolisten tcp, and to execute Xstop.

"This release features working Wayland sessions for the first time, but the greeter is still running on Xorg. This means that you will be able to login into a Wayland desktop environment without problems however the greeter screen still depends on X11," says Pier Luigi Fiorini.

It is now possible to set up a custom 'DBUS_CONFIG_FILENAME' variable during compilation, the TryExec function is now respected in Xsession desktop files, the non-free Maldives background has been replaced with a free one, and there are several improvements to the default theme.

Among other changes, we can mention that display setup script in SDDM 0.12.0 can be killed if it hasn't finished within 30 seconds, and min/max UIDs are no longer hardcoded, allowing for use of the 'UID_MIN' and 'UID_MAX' variables during compilation.

There's better support for FreeBSD systems

There's also numerous build improvements in SDDM 0.12.0, such as better support for the FreeBSD operating system, support for allowing the overridden of the 'QT_IMPORTS_DIR' and 'SYSTEMD_SYSTEM_UNIT_DIR' variables during compile time, ZSH and Qt 5.5 improvements, and support for the QT_NO_CAST_FROM_ASCII variable.

The Arabic and Hungarian language translations have been added, there's now complete support for right-to-left languages, and numerous other translations have been updated. Download SDDM 0.12.0 right now from Softpedia. Detailed installation instructions are provided on the project's website.
