Linux News Today: The Linux Foundation to Host FOSSology, the Open Source License Compliance Tool

Posted on October 08, 2015 by Syauqi Wiryahasana

During the LinuxCon Europe event that took place in Dublin, Ireland, between October 5 and 7, 2015, The Linux Foundation non-profit organization announced that they would host FOSSology, the open source license compliance system and toolkit.

Created back in 2007 by the famous HP (Hewlett-Packard) hardware manufacturer company, the FOSSology project received numerous contributions from the open source community, which led to its maturity in the coming years.

Today, FOSSology is being known as one of the most trusted tools for open source license compliance applications. Considering that The Linux Foundation organization works hard to accelerate the growth of Linux and open source projects, hosting the FOSSology project seems like the right thing to do.

"As Linux and open source have become the primary building blocks for creating today’s most innovative technologies, projects like FOSSology are more relevant than ever," says Jim Zemlin, executive director at The Linux Foundation. "FOSSology’s proven track record for improving efficiency in license compliance is the perfect complement to a suite of open compliance initiatives hosted at The Linux Foundation."

FOSSology 3.0 coming soon

Several important companies across the globe use the FOSSology open source license compliance software system and toolkit to run copyright and license scans, as well as export them with a single click. Among some of the most important companies that use FOSSology, we can mention Siemens, Bloomberg, Wind River, HP, and Sullivan & Worcester.

The next major release of the FOSSology project, version 3.0, will hit the streets in the coming days, bringing a host of new features, numerous under-the-hood improvements, as well as bug fixes, all in order to keep the software reliable, stable, and updated for the latest open source technologies available on the market.
