The developers of the SparkyLinux distribution were proud to announce today, October 2, the immediate availability for download of the final release of SparkyLinux 4.1.
Powered by Linux kernel 4.1.6 LTS and based on the Debian GNU/Linux 9.0 (Stretch) computer operating system, SparkyLinux 4.1 comes today as a free upgrade for SparkyLinux 4.0 users, bringing all sorts of goodies, including KDE Plasma Desktop 5, LibreOffice 5.0.1, systemd 226, and GCC 5.2.1.
First of all, SparkyLinux 4.1 is distributed with the Base (JWM and Openbox), CLI (Command-line Interface), LXQt, LXDE, Xfce, MATE, Enlightenment E19, KDE, and Rescue editions. New Live ISO images have been released for each one and you can download them at the end of the article.
And now for the new features, as SparkyLinux 4.1 implements policykit-1-gnome, adds ecryptfs-utils, and deprecated the Adobe Flash Player plugin in the Base edition, and uses the JWM 2.1.0, Openbox 3.6.1, LXQt 0.9.1, LXDE 0.99.0, Xfce 4.12.1, MATE 1.10.2, Enlightenment 0.19.11, and KDE Plasma 5.4.1 on the editions enumerated above.
“New iso images of SparkyLinux 4.1 are ready to go. Sparky 4 is based on and fully compatible with Debian testing ‘Stretch’. It’s the first update of SparkyLinux 4.x, which provides a few important changes,” reads the announcement. “If the upgrade made some problems for you, I suggest to backup your personal data and make fresh Sparky installation.”
SparkyLinux 4.2 arrives in December
Now that the SparkyLinux 4.1 distribution has been released, it is time for the SparkyLinux developers to concentrate their efforts on the next major release of the Linux kernel-based operating system, as they have announced that the SparkyLinux 4.2 release will arrive sometime at the end of December 2015. In the meantime, users of SparkyLinux 4.0 can upgrade to today’s 4.1 release as we speak.
