After announcing the visual workspace switcher applet, Clement Lefebvre, the lead developer of the Linux Mint and Cinnamon projects, had the great pleasure of introducing the new and improved sound applet of the upcoming Cinnamon 2.8 desktop environment.

According to Mr. Lefebvre, Cinnamon 2.8's sound applet will feature a new layout consisting of an overlay that includes the media controls and song information, as well as the cover art in the background.

Cinnamon users will see a new flat and interactive position bar displayed underneath for supported music player apps, which shows how far you're in the current track and helps you go forth and back in the song.

Additionally, the output devices, input controls, and applications have been moved to the sound applet's right-click context menu. When the system detects multiple sound devices, the output devices will display their origins.

"In Cinnamon 2.8 the sound applet will feature the following layout: The track info and media controls are now part of a new overlay which sits on top of the cover art," says Clement Lefebvre.

Users are being informed that the syling of the new sound applet is not finalized yet, but the final version, which will ship with the highly anticipated Cinnamon 2.8 desktop environment, will have better aligned sound output devices, and right-aligned button for raising and closing the player.
