The developers of the Tails GNU/Linux operating system, the amnesic incognito live system used by Edward Snowden to stay invisible online at all times, has announced the release of Tails 1.6.
According to the brief release notes, Tails 1.6 is a small maintenance release that updates the Tor Browser anonymous web browser software based on the Tor Project and Mozilla Firefox 38.3.0 ESR (Extended Support Release) to version 5.0.3.
Additionally, it updates the I2P (Invisible Internet Project) anonymous peer-to-peer distributed communication layer to version 0.9.22, as well as enables its AppArmor profile.
“Tails, The Amnesic Incognito Live System, version 1.6, is out. This release fixes numerous security issues and all users must upgrade as soon as possible. There are numerous other changes that might not be apparent in the daily operation of a typical user,” reads the announcement.
Several issues have been fixed in Tails 1.6, such as two problems with MAC address spoofing, one related to the disablement of the entire network, and the other one regarding to notifications. More details can be found in the announcement.
As usual, you can download Tails 1.6 right now from Softpedia, where the OS is freely distributed as a Live CD ISO image that contains software packages optimized only for 32-bit hardware architectures. The next version, Tails 1.7, is scheduled for release on November 3, 2015.
