An installer for drivers is a good tool in the Linux world. The other option is to use repositories or the files provided by the companies, and that’s almost always a hassle. Intel is the only company that provides this kind of tool, making the installation process a trivial one.
The only problem with this tool is that it’s always released at great intervals of time and just in time to cover distributions that have been around for quite some time. A good example is the support for Ubuntu 15.04, which was released in April. Now we’re in September and preparing for a new version of Ubuntu in October. The 15.04 branch will soon reach EOL (end of life).

The supported distributions are now Ubuntu 15.04 for 64-bit and 32-bit, and Fedora 22 for 64-bit and 32-bit. There is hope for other distros since the source code is provided as well.
