Tizen is an open-source Linux operating system developed under the umbrella of the Linux Foundation, which aims to run on phones, tablets, watches, and IVI (in-vehicle infotainment). A new milestone for the 3.0 branch of the operating system has been released, and it bring some pretty interesting changes.
As some of you might have already noticed, Tizen hasn’t had a huge impact on the market, despite being supported by a lot of companies, including Samsung. In fact, Tizen is just one of the few open-source operating systems that have been developed in the past few years, and none of them has really taken off. We can add to this list SailfishOS and Ubuntu Touch. Coming from behind is the Plasma Mobile, powered by KDE.
Companies are looking for alternatives to Android. Some of them chose to support Tizen, and others are still evaluating their choices. Moving people from Android or iOS is a huge task. Just take a look at Microsoft, who didn’t manage to budge them, despite having a lot of the money at their disposal.
Tizen 3.0 is a huge update
The operating system is built for various profiles, and the current iteration is actually made for TV and Mobile. Two of the biggest improvements seems to be the support for 64-bit and the replacement of the X server with Wayland.
“We are pleased to announce the Tizen 3.0 first milestone release for TV and Mobile profiles. This milestone provides developers with the Tizen kernel, device drivers, middleware subsystems, and Web/Native APIs, necessary to develop future Tizen compliant solutions and marks feature completion for the key features of Tizen 3.0 TV and Mobile profiles,” write the developers.
They have also said that the 64-bit SoC is being tested, X server is replaced with Wayland, Webkit2 has been replaced with Chromium-efl, a generic policy manager has been added, and the OS is now using Linux kernel 4.1.
