Linux News Today: Apache OpenOffice 4.1.2 Coming Soon with Better Microsoft Office Interoperability

Posted on October 01, 2015 by Syauqi Wiryahasana

Apache Software Foundation has announced recently that the second point release of their Apache OpenOffice 4.1 open-source office suite for GNU/Linux, Microsoft Windows, and Mac OS X operating system is coming soon.

According to the announcement, the work on Apache OpenOffice 4.1.2 is almost done and the release is imminent, bringing all sorts of goodies, such as better Microsoft Office interoperability (Sharepoint), as well as multiple improvements to all of its components, including Writer, Impress, Draw, Calc, and Base.

Additionally, there will be improvements to the document import functionality, support for modern and non-mainstream systems, and fixes for most of those annoying bugs that have been reported by users since the previous release of the software. Of course, there's no maintenance release without updated translations and code cleanup.

"A new OpenOffice update, version 4.1.2, has been in preparation for a while. Born as a simple bugfix release, it became an occasion for some deep restructuring in the project: several processes have now been streamlined (and some are still in the works), new people are on board and infrastructure has been improved," said the Apache OpenOffice developers.

With this occasion, the Apache Software Foundation would like to remind us that the OpenOffice project is exclusively maintained by members of the community, so everyone is welcome to volunteer and contribute with bugfixes and testing. More details can be found on the project's website.
