The Debian Live project is no more, and its leader announced that it had been absorbed by the debian-cd and the debian-installer teams, without his knowledge or approval.
A new heated discussion has been started inside the Debian project after Daniel Baumann, the leader of Debian Live, announced that this particular project was officially dead. He says that Debian Live has been hijacked by other developers inside Debian, and he wasn’t even consulted in this matter.
As usual, there are probably more sides to this story, but the message left by Daniel on the mailing list is pretty powerful and tells a really interesting story, but it’s a story that doesn’t include him at all, even as project leader. He says that this move hasn’t been discussed and that he didn’t have a clue about what was planned.
Debian Live is no more
Some of the reasons why Debian Live has been relocated included the fact that it wasn’t working on UEFI-powered systems and that it had a lot of bugs. Again, the developers of Debian Live said that they weren’t even notified of such issues.
“Depending on who you are, where you come from, and who your friends are, Debian can also be hateful and full of deceit. Before even more of reality is spin-doctored into some distorted view of it, and before my past work is being discredited, I will take the high road and continue my work on Debian Live images on the outside. Therefore, after having founded Debian Live back in 2006 and having by now almost 10 years continuously worked on it, without further ado: Debian Live is dead, hijacked by the debian-cd and the debian-installer Teams,” wrote developer Daniel Baumann.
It’s not clear if this is the end of the work done by Daniel for Debian, but it’s sad to see yet another dispute in a community that’s supposed to be above things like this.
