Linux News Today: FFmpeg 2.8.2 Officially Released

Posted on November 14, 2015 by Syauqi Wiryahasana

FFmpeg, a complete solution to record, convert and stream audio and video, has been upgraded to version 2.8.2 and is now ready for download and testing.

This this the second maintenance release the new FFmpeg 2.8.x branch. As usual, it comes with quite a few fixes, but there is nothing out of the ordinary. The multimedia framework has been getting a lot of attention lately, especially after it was re-added by default in Ubuntu.

"2.8.2 was released on 2015-11-12. It is the latest stable FFmpeg release from the 2.8 release branch, which was cut from master on 2015-09-05. Amongst lots of other changes, it includes all changes from ffmpeg-mt, libav master of 2015-08-28, libav 11 as of 2015-08-28," reads the official website.

The following packages have been upgraded and are now available: libavutil, libavcodec, libavformat, libavdevice, libavfilter, libavresample, libswscale, libswresample, and libpostproc. FFmpeg is the leading multimedia framework able to decode, encode, transcode, mux, demux, stream, filter, and play virtually any media that humans and machines have created.

A complete list of updates, features, and other fixes can be found in the official announcement. The source package for FFmpeg can be downloaded from Softpedia, but this is just the source. You will need to compile it yourself, although it would be a better idea to wait until it hits the repositories.
