Linux News Today: Linux Kernel 3.14.58 LTS Updates Networking and USB Drivers, Fixes ARM and x86 Issues

Posted on December 11, 2015 by Syauqi Wiryahasana

Immediately after informing GNU/Linux users about the release of Linux kernel 4.3.1, Linux kernel 4.2.7, and Linux kernel 4.1.14 LTS, Greg Kroah-Hartman published details about the fifty-eighth maintenance version of the long-term supported Linux 3.14 kernel.

According to the release announcement, Linux kernel 3.14.58 LTS is a modest release that patches a few issues with the ARM, ARM64 (AArch64) and x86 hardware architectures. Moreover, it updates the networking stack with various improvements to the IPv4 network protocol, as well as to things like Bluetooth, IrDA, mac80211, and Reliable Datagram Sockets (RDS), and it updates some USB sound drivers.

"I'm announcing the release of the 3.14.58 kernel. All users of the 3.14 kernel series must upgrade," said Greg Kroah-Hartman. "The updated 3.14.y git tree can be found at: git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git linux-3.14.y and can be browsed at the normal kernel.org git web browser: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=summary."

Several drivers have been updated

In addition to the networking, architectures, and sound changes mentioned above, Linux kernel 3.14.58 LTS updates several drivers, especially for things like Bluetooth, networking (mostly Ethernet, but also MacVTap, Wireless, and PPP), as well as USB. In numbers, this release changes 39 files, with 242 insertions and 81 deletions. For full details, we recommend consulting the diff from Linux kernel 3.14.57 LTS.

As usual, if you're using a GNU/Linux operating system powered by kernel packages from the Linux 3.14 LTS series, you need to update them to version 3.14.58 as soon as possible, or more precisely as soon as it arrives in the default software repositories of your distribution. Alternatively, if you're an experienced user, you can download the Linux kernel 3.14.58 LTS sources right now via Softpedia or from the kernel.org website and compile it by hand.
