Today, December 18, we’ve been informed by GNU/Linux developer Arne Exton about the immediate availability for download of a new build for its MeX Linux computer operating system.
According to Mr. Exton, MeX Linux Build 151217 was officially released on December 17, 2015, on the project’s website, bringing a special Linux 4.3.0-4-exton kernel that was injected with additional drivers to support even more hardware components.
However, one of the most important changes in the MeX Linux distribution is the rebase of the entire system on the Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) operating system, with some elements borrowed from the Debian GNU/Linux 8.1 (Jessie) OS, which means that it is no longer based on Linux Mint.
“Mex Linux is no longer based on Linux Mint. Why not Linux Mint? Latest Linux Mint 17.3 (Rosa) is based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. I simply think the system it’s too old, even though I’m aware of that some people think that Ubuntu 14.04 is ‘better’ than Ubuntu 15.10,” said Arne Exton for Softpedia.
MeX Linux runs Cinnamon 2.6.13 on top of Ubuntu 15.10
The latest build of the MeX Linux distribution run the Cinnamon 2.6.13 desktop environment on top of Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf). The developer explains that, at the moment, it is not possible for him to upgrade the Cinnamon packages to the latest 2.8 branch because they are now available in the stable software repositories of Ubuntu 15.10.
Users themselves can update to Cinnamon 2.8 by following some simple instructions. Among other interesting features implemented in MeX Linux Build 151217, we can mention that the Live ISO image has been made hybrid, which means that you can write it on a USB or CD media, and it is now possible to run the operating system directly from RAM by using the new “Copy to RAM” boot option.
