Linux News Today: Mozilla Firefox 43.0 Lands in All Supported Ubuntu Linux OSes, but No GTK3 Port

Posted on December 16, 2015 by Syauqi Wiryahasana

We reported the other day that the final bits of the Firefox 43.0 web browser were available for download as binaries and source packages for all supported computer operating systems on Mozilla's servers.

Earlier today, Mozilla has officially published the final release notes, announcing the general availability of Firefox 43.0 for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and GNU/Linux OSes. However, Mozilla has failed, once again, to deliver the GTK+ 3 port of its Firefox web browser to Linux users.

Despite the disappointment with not having a GTK3 port, GNU/Linux OS vendors started to distribute the packages of Firefox 43.0 web browser on their software repositories. Arch Linux was the first to get Mozilla Firefox 43.0 today, followed closely by Ubuntu Linux, as Canonical published its standard Ubuntu Security Notice announcement.

Therefore, we would like to inform Ubuntu users that they can now update their favorite web browser to Firefox 43.0 in the Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf), Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet), Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) operating systems, as well as any of their derivatives, including Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu GNOME, and Ubuntu Kylin.

What's new in Firefox 43

Among the new features implemented in Mozilla Firefox 43.0, we can mention support for blocking extra trackers in Private Browsing's Tracking Protection functionality, better API support for playing M4V videos, optional search suggestions in the Awesome Bar, as well as the implementation of telemetry data collection mechanism in Firefox Health Report.

Users of the Ubuntu 15.10, Ubuntu 15.04, Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, or Ubuntu 12.04 LTS operating systems are urged to upgrade their Firefox web browsers to the new 43.0 release as soon as possible. Canonical has already pushed the new version on the main software repositories, so all you have to is fire up the Software Updater tool and apply all existing updates after waiting for the repos to be refreshed.
