We reported earlier on the release of the Linux 3.2.81 LTS kernel, and we promised to tell you what's new in the thirty-sixth maintenance update of the long-term supported Linux 3.16 kernel series as well.
Linux kernel 3.16.36 LTS was also announced by Linux kernel developer Ben Hutchings today, June 16, 2016, immediately after he released Linux 3.2.81. Looking at the diff from the previous maintenance release, version 3.16.35, we can notice that the Linux 3.16.36 kernel is a big update that changes a total of 140 files, with 1416 insertions and 1004 deletions.
"I'm announcing the release of the 3.16.36 kernel. All users of the 3.16 kernel series should upgrade," said Ben Hutchings. What's new in Linux kernel 3.16.36 LTS
The appended shortlog of Linux kernel 3.16.36 LTS shows us that there are many improvements to the XFS and OCFS2 (Oracle Cluster File System 2) filesystems, updates to the Arc, ARM64 (AArch64), ARM, PA-RISC, PowerPC (PPC), s390, and x86 hardware architectures, as well as an updated networking stack, with changes to things like Ceph, B.A.T.M.A.N. Advanced, Netfilter, X.25, AX.25, and the new nl80211 802.11 netlink interface public header.
As expected, there are also numerous updated drivers included in Linux kernel 3.16.36 LTS, in particular for things like ATA, ACPI, Crypto, EDAC, GPU (mostly Intel i915 and Radeon AtomBIOS), HID, HV, I2C, iiO, InfiniBand, networking (Ethernet Atheros, Broadcom, Mellanox), PINCTRL, USB, SPI, and Virtio.
