Immediately after informing Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) users about the availability of an important kernel update for their systems, Canonical published details about a minor kernel update for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin).
We said minor, because only one security issue has been patched, which was discovered in Linux kernel’s keyring subsystem, a race between revoke and read operations, allowing local attackers to crash the system by causing a DoS (denial-of-service) attack.
“A security issue affects these releases of Ubuntu and its derivatives, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS,” notes today’s Ubuntu Security Notice USN-2911-1. “The system could be made to crash under certain conditions.”
It might not look like much, but Ubuntu 12.04 LTS users still need to update their systems as soon as possible. The new kernel version is linux-image-3.2.0-99 (3.2.0-99.139).
To update, run the Software Updater utility from the Unity Dash, wait for the tool to reload the software repositories and find new updates, then press the “Install” button to install all available updates.
Make sure you reboot your system once all the updates have been installed on your machine. Please also note that you will need to rebuild any third-party kernel module you might have installed on your computer.
