openSUSE developer Ludwig Nussel has proudly announced today, May 24, 2016, that a first Alpha build of the upcoming openSUSE Leap 42.2 computer operating system is now ready for public testing.
Yes, that’s right, openSUSE Leap 42.2 is now open for development, and a first Alpha version has arrived earlier for those who like to live on the bleeding edge and can’t wait to discover the new GNU/Linux technologies implemented by the skillful openSUSE devs in the upcoming OS.
“Before getting too excited, note that the goal for Alpha1 was mostly to get the setup and tools ready for 42.2,” says Ludwig Nussel in today’s announcement. “So as I described in my last status update, 42.2 right now is basically 42.1 + updates. There are two exceptions though.”
Powered by the same kernel packages as the SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 Service Pack 2 Beta 1, version 4.4 LTS (Long Term Support), openSUSE Leap 42.2 Alpha 1 ships today with the latest Qt 5.6 toolkit, which also landed in the openSUSE Tumbleweed branch earlier this week, as well as numerous security patches and updates.
Final openSUSE Leap 42.2 release arrives in the first week of November
The development cycle of the openSUSE Leap 42.2 operating system, which promises to be a major update for those who are currently using openSUSE Leap 42.1 on their personal computers, will continue with a second Alpha build. This one should be available for public testing just before the openSUSE Conference 2016 event that will take place between June 22 and 26, in Nürnberg, Germany.
The third and last Alpha release of openSUSE Leap 42.2 is arriving sometime in July, followed one month later by the first Beta version. After that, a second Beta build should launch in September, and two Release Candidates will ship in October. The final release of openSUSE Leap 42.2 is currently scheduled to arrive in the first week of November 2016.
By that time, the openSUSE developers plan on integrating over 700 updated packages from the SUSE Linux Enterprise 12 Service Pack 2 release.
