On November 23, the Netrunner Team was happy to announce the final release and immediate availability for download of the Netrunner 17 GNU/Linux operating system, dubbed Horizon.
Based on the latest stable release of the Kubuntu Linux distribution and powered by Linux kernel 4.2, Netrunner 17 “Horizon” features a darkish, beautiful implementation of the recently debuted KDE Plasma 5.4.3 desktop environment, which also includes the KDE Applications 15.08.2 software and KDE Frameworks 5.15.0 collection of add-ons for the Qt 5 GUI toolkit.
“The Netrunner Team is happy to announce the release of Netrunner 17 (codename Horizon) – 64bit version. (Note that the 32bit version remains at ’16’ until 18 LTS),” said the developers. “Netrunner 17 ‘s codename is chosen as an indication of a mature Plasma finally emerging on the horizon with another update of KDE Plasma, Frameworks, and Applications.”
Among some of the new features implemented in the distribution, we can mention an all-new collection of wallpapers of various styles and colors. Also worth paying attention to are the addition of two new themes in the “Desktop Configuration” settings, BlueX and BlackX, for the KDE Plasma 5 desktop environment, and the Mozilla Firefox 42.0.3 web browser with built-in Plasma support.
Many apps have been updated to their latest versions
In addition to the great set of features listed above, Netrunner 17 (Horizon) also updates numerous core components and applications to their latest versions as of November 23, 2015. Among them, we can notice the LibreOffice 5.0 office suite, Oracle VirtualBox 5.0 virtualization software, Mozilla Thunderbird 38.3.0 email and news client, VLC Media Player 2.2.1 video player, Gmusicbrowser 1.15.2 audio player, and Kontact 5.
