The Solus operating system is approaching a stable release once more, and it looks like we might be able to boot that elusive 1.0 version before Christmas.
Solus 1.0 was supposed to be released on October 1, but the development team face a number of problems that forced them to postpone the launch. Developers took the time to make numerous changes to the OS, upgraded some core components, and basically improve the entire stack of packages and applications.
This was done to ensure that the final product is something that everyone will be able to use. In hindsight, the fact that Solus had all of these problems was probably a good thing since the developers have done a lot since then. Now, they are approaching a new milestone, and they want to release it in time for the holidays.
Solus is now being built by all, for all
Solus started its life as the pet project of Ikey Doherty, and some people might remember another of his distros, Solus OS. In any case, it looks like this is getting a lot more attention than he planned. He explained it very simply, “At some point, though, it stopped being the thing I was building for myself. Now, Solus is something we’re all building, for all of us.”
Solus is powered by a new desktop environment named Budgie, which has been under development for two years. This is a stable component and it has been already adopted in a few other operating systems.
Ikey also explained that he plans to release Solus before Christmas and that they don’t have a lot of work left to do. Sure, they will probably release another RC down the line, and they are now focusing more on bug fixes, more than anything else.
With that in mind, you can download the latest Solus build and give it a spin. Make sure to upgrade if you want the latest packages and features.
