Linux News Today: Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) Will Soon Be Rebased on Linux Kernel 4.3

Posted on November 18, 2015 by Syauqi Wiryahasana

On November 17, Canonical's Joseph Salisbury was pleased to announce the availability of the first Ubuntu Kernel Team Newsletter, which will be published on the Ubuntu Wiki on a weekly basis.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team Newsletter will replace the regular "Minutes from the Ubuntu Kernel Team Meeting" reports sent by Mr. Salisbury to inform Ubuntu users about the latest work done by the members of the Ubuntu Kernel Team at Canonical. It also promises to include more than the basic information related to the development of both the stable and unstable Linux kernel packages of upcoming Ubuntu releases.

For example, the first Ubuntu Kernel Team Newsletter includes highlights from the week that has just passed, like the release of the stable Ubuntu Linux 3.19.8-ckt10 kernel, the availability of the stable Ubuntu Linux 3.16.7-ckt20 and 3.13.11-ckt30 kernels for review, as well as the decision of Greg Kroah-Hartman to make Linux 4.4 the next LTS (Long Term Support) kernel.

Linux kernel 4.3 to arrive soon for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

Getting back to what's important for Ubuntu users, the Ubuntu Kernel Team announced that they were still tracking the Linux kernel 4.2 packages of Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) for the development of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus), which will be soon rebased on the Linux 4.3 kernel series, but until then, the devs need to clean the DKMS packages.

"The Ubuntu Kernel Team is pleased to announce the first Kernel Team Newsletter," said Joseph Salisbury. "Our Xenial kernel is open for development. Our Xenial master branch is still tracking Wily's v4.2 based kernel, but Xenial master-next is currently rebased to v4.3. We’re actively getting DKMS packages cleaned up against v4.3 before we upload to the archive."

The development cycle of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS has just started, and a first Alpha build (only for opt-in flavors) will be available on the last day of the year, December 31. The Alpha 2 build will arrive one month later, on January 28, 2016, followed by the first Beta version on February 25, and the Final Beta release on March 24. Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) lands on April 21, 2016.
