Linux News Today: elementary Devs Move the OS' Icons from Canonical's Launchpad to GitHub

Posted on December 08, 2015 by Syauqi Wiryahasana

A few moments ago, December 8, the developers of the elementary GNU/Linux operating system, an Ubuntu derivative loved by the community for its gorgeous look and feel, have announced the migration of the distro's icons to GitHub.

Until today, the elementary icons were hosted on Launchpad, the project hosting website designed by Canonical for its Ubuntu operating system, where many of the elementary OS' core components reside, but in order to encourage collaboration and reuse, the elementary developers decided to move the icons to the popular GitHub project hosting site.

"Today we pushed the elementary icon set to GitHub to encourage collaboration and reuse," said Cassidy James in today's announcement. "You may have noticed we’ve been cozying up to GitHub lately. First, we open sourced our website at the beginning of the year and have since merged pull requests from over 50 people. [...] As of today, we’re happy to announce that we’ve moved the elementary icon set to GitHub as well."

While many of the operating system's components will remain on Launchpad, which apparently has much better management and deployment tools than GitHub, the elementary devs think that GitHub is the perfect place for hosting the elementary icons, as they believe that the iconset will get much more attention from designers from all over the world.
