Linux News Today: PINE64, the World's First 64-Bit Expandable Supercomputer, Runs Ubuntu and Android 5.1

Posted on December 10, 2015 by Syauqi Wiryahasana

We introduced you, guys, to the PINE64 single-board computer (SBC) a couple of days ago, when we stated that it was the world's first $15 open source gaming machine running Android and Linux.

It looks like many of you out there loved the idea of a 64-bit expandable supercomputer, and today we have even more great news for you, as PINE64 is now on Kickstarter, and you can pre-order a unit or more at the price of $15 (approximately €14).

What is great about PINE64 is that it's versatile and expandable, but also that it is capable of running almost any modern GNU/Linux distribution, such as Ubuntu, as well as the Android 5.1 mobile operating system, OpenWrt, and openHUB.

"Whether you are an IT professional, electronics hobbyist, student, teacher, hacker, inventor, or just someone who wants to have more flexibility to increase their productivity at work, the PINE A64 is a computer board made for everyone," explain the devs.

PINE64 technical specifications

Let's have a closer look at the technical specifications of the PINE64 single-board computer. From the looks of it, the SBC is powered by a Quad-Core ARM A53 64-bit processor clocked at 1.2GHz, a Dual-Core MALI-400 MP2 GPU that runs at 500MHz, up to 1GB DDR3 RAM, up to Gigabit Ethernet, 4K HDMI output, and two USB 2.0 ports.

The developers of PINE64 say that the graphics capabilities of this tiny computer are higher than the ones of the original Xbox gaming console. Another interesting thing about PINE64 is that it can be easily turned into an advanced Apple TV-like Android product that supports Miracast.

Below we've prepared a few awesome images of the PINE64 single-board computer in action, as well as a video showing the devs play Fruit Ninja with an optional Air Mouse. Go and get your PINE64 or PINE64+ supercomputer right now from Kickstarter, and you'll receive it in early February 2016.
