We’ve reported earlier today, December 12, that an unofficial Linux 4.3.1 kernel package was made available by GNU/Linux developer Arne Exton for the Slackware 14.1 operating system and its derivatives.
Now Mr. Exton informs us about the fact that he has also managed to update his SlackEX Live Linux distribution, which runs on the new kernel 4.3.1-x86_64-exton package, is based on the upstream Slackware 14.1 operating system, and is built around the KDE4 desktop environment.
“I have replaced kernel 4.1.1-x86_64-exton with kernel 4.3.1-x86_64-exton with support for ‘everything.’ KDE is downgraded to version 4.10.5 from version 4.11.1. All other component software is also upgraded to the latest Slackware version by now,” said Arne Exton in an email to Softpedia.
What’s new in SlackEX Build 151211
Besides having injected the Linux kernel 4.3.1 package, which is one of the most advanced Linux kernel versions available at the moment of writing this article, SlackEX Build 151211 downgrades the KDE4 desktop environment from version 4.11.1 to 4.10.5. Moreover, it upgrades most of its core components to the latest versions available in the official Slackware 14.1 software repositories.
Additionally, SlackEX Build 151211 ships with the GParted 0.24.0 partition editor software, the VirtualBox 5.0.10 virtualization software, the Google Chrome 46.0.2490.86 web browser, the AbiWord 2.8.6 word processor, the GIMP 2.8.10 image editor, which are not available in Slackware’s repos, as well as GSlapt 0.5.3h, Mozilla Firefox 31.7, Mozilla Thunderbird 31.6, Samba 3.6.8, and GCC 4.8.2.
Additionally, the new SlackEX build ships with the latest GRUB2 boot loader. You can download the SlackEX Build 151211 Live DVD ISO image for 64-bit computers right now from Softpedia.
