Linux News Today: Solus Gets Linux Kernel Improvements and Multiple Package Updates

Posted on December 07, 2015 by Syauqi Wiryahasana

A new week has passed for the Solus operating system, and more improvements have been made to the distro, not to mention that a second stable daily image has been published.

To make one thing abundantly clear, the Solus operating system is not yet considered stable, but a stable version is expected to land in the next few weeks. These latest daily images are just showing off the changes that have been made lately and prove that it’s becoming more and more reliable.

Nothing too extraordinary happened this week, with the exception of packages updates, but that’s to be expected. Now that a stable build is being worked on, developers are concentrating much harder on bug fixes and other possible problems.

From the looks of it, the Budgie desktop environment has temporarily lost its ability to use media keys, huge pages, and better hardware support has landed with the latest Linux kernel 4.1.13-95, LZ4 decompression of initramfs on x86_64 has been fixed, and OpenSSL has been upgraded.

These are just of the biggest changes, but you can add to that the upgrade to qBittorrent 3.3.0, Telegram 0.9.13, and GTK+ 3.18.6, just to name a few.

It’s also worth noting that Solus devs are also working to improve the Optimus support in their operating system, and they were looking for some proper hardware to make that happen.

Solus is expected to land sometime before Christmas.
