Today, June 30, 2016, Mike Blumenkrantz from the Enlightenment project has had the great pleasure of announcing the final release of the Enlightenment DR 0.21.0 desktop environment.
Enlightenment is a free window manager/desktop environment distributed under an open source license for all and any GNU/Linux operating system that wants to either adopt it as the default user interface or include it in the software repositories.
The main goal of the Enlightenment desktop environment is to be as lightweight as possible, but at the same time beautiful, and last but not least, provide users with the latest, cutting-edge technologies.
Therefore, Enlightenment 0.21.0 is now the most advanced version, bringing great improvements to the support for the next-generation Wayland display server, support for video backgrounds, enhancements to the wizard component, and a new gadget infrastructure.
Lots of Wayland-related usability bugs have been resolved
Enlightenment 0.21.0 has been in development for the past three months, during which it received an Alpha build, a Beta version, and a Release Candidate (RC). Public testers were able to report bugs during its development cycle for the development team to able to fix as many issues as possible.
Since the Release Candidate version, which was announced at the beginning of the month, Enlightenment 0.21.0 received lots of Wayland-related usability improvements, enhancements to the keyboard layout management features, and fixes for various crashes and other reported issues.
The final release of the Enlightenment 0.21.0 desktop environment is available for download right now via our website, as a source archive, but it should make its way into the main software repositories of some of the most popular GNU/Linux distributions in the coming days.
If you decide to compile Enlightenment 0.21.0 using its sources, please try to keep in mind that you'll need to have EFL 1.17 or newer if you want X11 compositing support, or EFL 1.18 if you're deploying it on a Wayland installation. The latest EFL release is available from the announcement page.
