The development team behind the first Debian-based Linux distribution, Raspbian, which was designed from the ground up to support the Raspberry Pi single-board computer (SBC) series, has announced the availability of Raspbian 2015-11-21.
In case you haven’t noticed yet, the new Raspbian image is tagged as version 2015-11-21, which means that it was released a couple of weeks ago, on November 21, 2015. However, at the users’ request, the project’s developers have decided to make an announcement and lay down the features implemented in this new release.
As expected, one of the most important features of the new Raspbian image is support for the awesome, brand new Raspberry Pi Zero SBC, also known as the $5 computer. However, the support for Raspberry Pi Zero was also the main reason behind the decision of the Raspbian developers not to make a public announcement for the new release of the Debian-based GNU/Linux operating system.
“Obviously, one of the most important features of this image is support for Pi Zero (which is also the main reason we didn’t make any fuss about it in advance…) But there are a few other small changes which apply to all versions of the Pi, so here’s a list for the curious,” said Simon Long, one of the Raspbian developers in the release announcement.

Besides support for Raspberry Pi Zero, the Raspbian 2015-11-21 image brings numerous other interesting features. Among them, we can mention the inclusion of IBM’s Node-RED Internet Of Things software, allowing users to create IoT apps by connecting blocks in a graphical editor, a brand new graphical package manager, as well as the addition of new GPIO Zero libraries.
Moreover, the Scratch text editor and Epiphany web browser applications have been updated to their latest versions available at the moment of Raspbian 2015-11-21’s release, along with updates to the Raspberry Pi Configuration application.
