Today, December 4, Valve has pushed a new update for the SteamOS Brewmaster to the brewmaster_beta channel, version 2.55, which is a drop-in replacement for the SteamOS Brewmaster 2.49 release announced last month.
According to the release notes posted earlier on the Steam Universe group on Steam, the SteamOS Brewmaster 2.55 update introduces new kernel packages (linux-latest, firmware-free, and firmware-nonfree) based on the upstream, long-term supported Linux 4.1.13 kernel, which should patch a regression in the Intel video driver.
The addition of Linux kernel 4.1.13 LTS also introduces support for the Atheros Killer E2400 Ethernet controller in alx driver and dumps the size check function from the Dualshock 4 HID Descriptor. Furthermore, the SteamOS Compositor has received a fix for the cursor hiding issue that occurred when pressing or holding a mouse button.
“SteamOS brewmaster update 2.55 pushed to brewmaster_beta. This updates to the 4.1.13 kernel which fixes a regression in the Intel graphics driver. Also a compositor fix and the usual rollup of security fixes,” say Valve’s SteamOS developers in today’s announcement.
Several packages have been updated
In addition to the new Linux kernel version and SteamOS Compositor, the SteamOS Brewmaster 2.55 release updates several core components of the GNU/Linux operating system, including the DPKG package manager, the Iceweasel web browser, as well as the NSPR, UnZip, WPA, libpng, LSHW, KRB5, NTP, and ATTR packages.

As usual, you can download the latest SteamOS ISO images right now from Softpedia. SteamOS is based on the Debian GNU/Linux operating system, but no Live CDs are provided at the moment of writing this article, so you will need to install the OS directly on your personal computer.
