Meizu, the well-known Chinese consumer electronics company, which most Ubuntu users better know for their awesome Meizu MX4 Ubuntu Edition smartphone, teased us earlier on Twitter with what it would appear to be the launch of a new device.
We reported a few weeks ago that images of a Meizu Pro 5 smartphone running the Ubuntu Touch mobile operating system have been leaked online, and today the Chinese mobile manufacturer says in their latest tweet that quoting "More love is awaiting you at MWC 2016."
As you may know, the other Ubuntu Phone manufacturer, BQ, a Spanish producer of smartphones, tablets, 3D printers, and electronic readers, already ships two smartphones with Ubuntu mobile OS pre-installed, the BQ Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition and BQ Aquaris E5 HD Ubuntu Edition.
And this year at MWC (Mobile World Congress) 2015, BQ are presenting their latest device, the world's first real Ubuntu Touch tablet, which has been officially announced by Canonical last week as the BQ Aquaris M10 Ubuntu Edition. So, Meizu being one step behind their European counterparts, they need a new device.
Meizu Pro 5 Ubuntu Edition
And so, we firmly believe that the Meizu Pro 5 smartphone is a good candidate for being the next Ubuntu Phone device. OK, so what's so special about Meizu Pro 5? Well, a lot. It has a bigger, 5.7 inches display with Full HD resolution, it's a dual-sim phone, 3 GB RAM for the 32GB model and 4 GB RAM for the 64GB one, and a 5MP selfie camera.
On the downside, the battery is a little smaller when compared to Meizu MX4 Ubuntu Edition, 3050 mAh battery on Meizu Pro 5 vs. 3100 mAh battery on Meizu MX4, but it boasts an Exynos 7420 Octa MediaTek MT6595 Quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 and Quad-core 2.1.0 GHz Cortex-A57 CPU with a Mali-T760MP8 GPU.
We've already told you a couple of days ago that Canonical will have, again, a strong presence at MWC 2016, where the company behind the world's most popular free operating system will showcase their latest Ubuntu convergence features. and now that we know there might be two new Ubuntu-powered devices, we're quite excited. Aren't you?
