Linux News Today: OpenMandriva Lx 3.0 Beta 2 Brings Linux Kernel 4.6.2, systemd 230 & F2FS Support

Posted on June 27, 2016 by Syauqi Wiryahasana

Today, June 27, 2016, the OpenMandriva team was happy to inform Softpedia via an email announcement that the second Beta release of the upcoming OpenMandriva Lx 3.0 operating system is now ready for public testing.

OpenMandriva Lx 3.0 Beta 2 arrives less than three months from the release of the first Beta build, bringing numerous up-to-date GNU/Linux technologies, among which we can mention Linux kernel 4.6.2, the latest systemd 230 init system, X.Org 1.18.3 display server, and Mesa 3D Graphics Library 12.0.0 Release Candidate 4.

Of course, the latest builds of the KDE Plasma 5.6 and KDE Applications 16.04 are also present. Additionally, the second Beta of OpenMandriva Lx 3.0 also comes, for the first time in the history of the distribution, with support for the F2FS file system, which the operating system developers say it's very good for SSD drives.

"It was worth waiting for it, we promise! OpenMandriva Lx 3.0 Beta2 is now ready," reads today's announcement. "This second beta has concentrated on improved stability and performance and now, for the first time, has accommodation for the Chinese and Japanese languages using fcitx to support their input methods."

MPV and VLC Media Player have been added

The software collection of the OpenMandriva Lx 3.0 operating system is growing with each new Beta release, and this one brings the popular MPV and VLC Media Player video players, along with the Plasma Media Center for those who want to transform their OpenMandriva OS into a veritable media center solution.

There's also an alternative full-screen application launcher, the LXQt desktop environment as a light alternative to the KDE Plasma 5 desktop featuring the Qupzilla web browser and PCmanFM file manager. Best of all, the K3b CD/DVD image burning software was ported from KDE4 to KDE Plasma 5.

Last but not least, OpenMandriva Lx 3.0 will be among the few GNU/Linux distributions that switched from Python 2.x to 3.x completely, and let's not forget that it's build entirely with LLVM/clang. OpenMandriva Lx 3.0 Beta 2 is available for download right now via our website, but please try to keep in mind that this is a pre-release version of Beta quality.
